Counseling Services

Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling can address a variety of mental health and substance use concerns. We all have thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships. Some of these are healthy, and some of these are unhealthy. Our job, as counselor and client, is to increase the healthy ones and decrease the unhealthy ones by providing strategies and techniques specific to your needs. Counseling teaches you strategies and provides you with tools to change these unhealthy thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships. Sessions are available via tele-health or in-person at our office in downtown Denton.

Couples, Marriage, and Pre-Marital Counseling

Couples counseling can be utilized for pre-marital counseling, relationship difficulties, or co-parenting concerns. Couples counseling is designed to transform conflict, promote more healthy interactions and open dialogue in order to facilitate needed behavior change, healing, and forgiveness. Couples counseling can be used to address a wide variety of issues that lead to conflict, including infidelity, substance use, intimacy or sexuality concerns, violence, or general mental health concerns. Sessions are available via tele-health or in-person at our office in downtown Denton.

Trauma Counseling (EMDR)

Past or current traumatic events can negatively impact your ability to lead a healthy and fulfilling life due to the brain's inability to correctly process the emotions associated with the trauma. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is used to treat trauma and PTSD by performing a series of back and forth, repetitive eye movements for 20-30 seconds. During the therapy session, an individual stimulates the brain with back and forth eye movements, specific sequences of tapping, or musical tones. These eye movements, in conjunction with recalling memories of the traumatic event, can help individuals change their emotional reactions. A number of studies have shown it can reduce the emotional distress resulting from traumatic memories by replacing negative emotional reactions to difficult memories with less-charged or positive reactions or beliefs. EMDR is currently one of the treatments the Veteran's Affairs Administration uses to treat combat veterans with PTSD. Find out more about EMDR by visiting the EMDR Institute's Website.

Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention

Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) was developed at the University of Washington's Addictive Behaviors Research Center and utilizes the practice of mindful awareness to help those suffering from addictions.

Through MBRP, the individual becomes aware of triggers, destructive behavior patterns, and automatic reactions to triggers so that they can regain control of their lives. The MBRP program is designed to teach clients to pause, observe their present experience, and bring awareness to the range of choices available to them at the present moment. By practicing MBRP, you have the opportunity to respond to events and feelings in positive ways. MBRP can help you work towards freedom from addiction and deeply ingrained habits that have a negative impact on your life.

MBRP is best suited to individuals who have undergone initial treatment and have at least 30 days of sobriety. An initial screening interview will be done to ensure that the program is right for you and will help you work towards your goals. MBRP can be done in both group and individual counseling sessions.

MBRP has been extensively researched and has demonstrated effectiveness in preventing relapse. More information can be found at the Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention website. Read the initial study's findings on efficacy and outcomes provided by the National Institute of Health.
